Tap a boat and it chugs, zooms, dives, or rocks, then shares a fact about the job it does. Because that's the secret of boats for toddlers: every boat has a job, and jobs are fascinating.

Bath time will never be the same, and we mean that as a promise, not a warning.

Meet these first

• Tugboat. Small but mighty, pushing and pulling giant ships into port. The toddler of the harbor, and its favorite word is also "me do it."
• Submarine. Dives deep underwater and peeks up with its long periscope. Make periscope hands immediately.
• Speedboat. Zooms super fast and leaves a big splashy wake behind it. The zoom is the whole personality.
• Cruise Ship. A floating hotel as tall as a building. Beds, dinners, the works, all floating.
• Ferry. A big flat boat that carries people and cars across the water. Cars. On a boat. Sit with that one.
• Houseboat. A real house that floats, so you can live right on the water. File under dreams, toddler and adult.
• Gondola. A fancy boat pushed along with one long pole. The slowest, most elegant ride in the fleet.
• Paddleboat. Moves when you pedal your feet, like a bicycle on the water.

The pointy canoe, the rowboat with its two oars, the skinny kayak, and the net-carrying fishing boat are docked and ready.

How to play (60 seconds)

Sort by speed. Which boat is fastest? Slowest? Zoom your hands for the speedboat, chug-chug-chug for the tugboat, drift serenely for the gondola. Then play jobs: "Which boat carries cars? Which one catches fish? Which one do you live in?" At the next bath, any floating cup becomes the ferry, and the words come back on their own. That's the whole trick.

Good to know

"Boat" is a classic early word, short and satisfying to say, and this hub surrounds it with the sound-effect words toddlers grab first: zoom, chug, splash. Sound effects are real vocabulary. They carry meaning, they invite copying, and they turn into sentences before you know it.
