Opposites for kids
Tap any one to watch it move, hear a friendly fun fact, and make a silly sound!
What's here
Twelve opposite pairs, and every tap acts out both halves: the balloon blows up big and shrinks back little, the sun shines hot and the snowflake glitters cold, the bouncy ball goes up and comes back down. Opposites are prime talking material because they arrive in twos. Say one half and the other half is sitting right there waiting, which turns almost any moment of the day into a fill-in-the-blank game your toddler can win.
Meet these first
- Big & Little. A balloon can blow up BIG, then let the air out to get teeny LITTLE.
- Up & Down. A bouncy ball goes up, up, up, then comes back down to the ground.
- Fast & Slow. A speedy rabbit runs fast, but a sleepy snail creeps slow.
- Hot & Cold. The sun is hot and glowy, but a snowflake is cold and icy.
- Loud & Quiet. A drum can boom super loud, then tap soft and quiet as a whisper.
- In & Out. A turtle pokes its head out of its shell, then tucks it back in.
- Open & Closed. A treasure chest pops open, then shuts all the way closed.
- Wet & Dry. A puddle is wet and splashy, but the warm sun makes it all dry.
Day & Night, High & Low, Full & Empty, and Push & Pull complete the set.
How to play (60 seconds)
Opposites are a whole-body game. Tap Big & Little, then stretch up huge together and shrink down tiny. Tap Fast & Slow and run your fingers up their arm fast, then creep them slow like the snail. Tap Loud & Quiet, do one big clap, then the quietest whisper-clap you can manage. Once the pattern clicks, start leaving the second half blank: "the sun is hot, but the snowflake is..." and let them land the ending.
Good to know
Opposite pairs quietly teach how words relate to each other, not just what single things are called. A toddler who has "big" and "little" can suddenly comment on everything: big dog, little dog, big bite, little bite. And the fill-in-the-blank trick works because the pair carries its own answer. You supply the setup, they supply the payoff, and completing a grown-up's sentence feels like winning to a two-year-old.
